Mercy For Animals is the latest organization taking aim at Walmart. This time the issue is not about child labor, sexism, or worker’s rights. MFA conducted an investigation into Walmart’s pork producers and found some pretty terrible things. As if it’s the least bit surprising considering Walmart is a notoriously inhumane company.

Check out the MFA video with warning of it’s graphic content:

Mercy For Animals says their investigation documented the following:

  • Pregnant pigs confined to filthy, metal gestation crates so small they are unable to even turn around or lie down comfortably
  • Workers slamming conscious piglets headfirst into the ground and leaving them to slowly suffer and die
  • Workers ripping out the testicles and slicing off the tails of piglets without the use of any painkillers
  • Sick and injured pigs with severe, bleeding wounds or infections left to suffer without veterinary care

I think these are all terrible findings. Though, I’m not surprised! Walmart has been the subject of boycotts, lawsuits and more regarding a variety of issues like sex discrimination, worker’s rights, sustainability, and more. Walmart has even been known to take out life insurance policies on individuals and profit on their deaths! Is it really surprising that Walmart uses a supplier like this?

I’m not minimizing the efforts of Mercy For Animals. I think it’s good that they are making more people aware of the cruelty involved in profiting from animal exploitation. What makes me a bit uneasy though is that Walmart could pledge to make conditions better for these animals, which Walmart will not abide by, and then people will go on to eat Walmart pork again or eat more of it. Or, even worse, people could choose not to eat the pork but buy Walmart’s chicken or beef products where the animals are treated the same way before being killed.
